2025 NSW Gateball Championships
Published Sun 28 Sep 2025
2025 NSW Gateball Championship events were held at Canberra CC, 26-28 September. The weather was warm spring at its best, although the very strong wind on Friday pushed many a ball out of court on the fast lawns.
Play started with the President of the Club, Susie Linge, hitting a ball through the traditional gateball ceremonial gate.

The Doubles matches (12 teams) were played in two blocks over 12 rounds on Friday and Saturday morning, and included semi-finals and finals. The final was an exceptionally exciting match with the winning team of Philip Brown and Maxine Maclachlan (Kew) passing the runners-up Cheryl O’Dwyer (Warrnambool) and Geoff Crook (Woodville) on the last turn of the match. The NSW Gateball Coordinator, Petula Shun, presented members of both teams with badges and presented the perpetual trophy to the winners.
The Teams Championship (6 teams) started after lunch on Saturday and went through to lunch on Sunday, running over 8 rounds. The Canberra team of Ralph Richardson, Craig Oxley, Cathy Sheehan, Peter Freer, Kathie Maloney and Kevin Maloney were the winners with 4 wins and 31 net hoops while the runners-up were Hazelbrook (John Park, Penny Park, Maxine Maclachlan, Gilon Smith and Jude Squelch) with 4 wins and 18 net hoops.
On Saturday, all matches were livestreamed as arranged by Croquet NSW. The excellent video and commentary of the livestream is now available on YouTube.
