Advantage GC Target Scores

This page consolidates information for implementing the Advantage GC Target Scores handicapping system in a carnival/tournament.
The current tables and forms from the WCF are dated 2026, and have been obtained from Croquet England's website at this link.

'Playing to Advantage'

These presentation notes explain how to use the charts and tables that form the documentation of the system.

Step 1: Working out Target Score Ratios from player Handicaps

Use this table to determine Target Hoops required by each player depending on their handicap:

  • TARGET SCORES TABLE - Hoop Ratios required by Stronger/Weaker player.
  • Presentation notes - refer to pages 11 and 13 for Singles players ratio information; refer to page 14-17 for Doubles team ratios.
  • DOUBLES TEAM ratios - A doubles game can be played by calculating the average handicap for each side (half the sum of the two handicaps) with halves rounded up. The target score for each side can then be obtained from the table of Hoop Ratios (above) using the average handicaps.
However, for average handicaps greater than 12, this rounding may give an invalid result. In such cases, either add one to odd integers (e.g. 13 becomes 14) or round non-integers (up or down) to the nearest even integer (e.g. 12.5 becomes 12).

Step 2: Score Sheets

Score sheets have been pre-prepared for the most common Target Score ratio combinations (see links below).
Select the appropriate scoresheet for each pairing of Singles & Doubles game participants.

The stronger player is always the Player [A] side of the sheet.

Scorers are to circle hoops for each player (Player [A] side or Player [B] side) as they progress through the game towards their Target Hoops.

If a game times out before a player/team has achieved their Target Hoops, the visual arrangement of scored hoops increments, with the associated progressive percentages, will assist scorers, referees and players to determine a winner - or in some instances, if the game is tied and therefore another hoop to be played.

Information from the Scoring Percentage Table for unfinished Advantage games has been included on the score sheets, for convenience.

The Percentage % Scored (these are noted beside each hoop achieved) should be completed on the score sheet to confirm the winner of the game.
This will also assist the Tournament Manager with entering results (as percentages %) on Croquet Scores.
